REBUILDING THE ECONOMY

Zimbabwe had the second most developed economy on the continent when the country attained independence in 1980. Today, after 38 years of independence, almost every country in Africa has overtaken Zimbabwe and the people live in gross poverty.  In 2000, prior to the land grab, the pillars of the economy were agriculture, commerce & industry, mining and tourism.

 

The Mike Campbell Foundation focuses primarily on the following vital requirements for rebuilding the economy:

RESTORATION OF RULE OF LAW

i.e. a return to law & order. This includes:

  • Independence of the judiciary/the impartial dispensing of justice

  • Accountability/holding the government accountable

  • Respect for civil rights, property and contractual obligations

  • Protection by the state of Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (BIPPAs)

PROPERTY RIGHTS

  • Property rights for all and the protection of property rights

  • Restoration of property rights in the commercial agricultural sector

  • Access to bank loans using titled land as collateral

  • Compensation for dispossessed farmers

AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

  • The rebuilding of a strong, diversified commercial agricultural sector

  • Support for small and medium-scale farmers on titled land

  • The promotion of conservation agriculture
