ETHEKWINI SURFING ASSOCIATION Development Surfer Program
Objectives of the Program:
PART 1: Development Surfers
1. Identify new development surfers from an age of 10 -15, both boys and girls.
2. Teach the children the basics of surfing and safety in the ocean
3. Identify talent in the community to advance these surfers to a reasonably competitive level and introduce them to the system of trials and competitions.
4. Introduce them to the club level of surfing.
5. Possibly form a development club that can compete with the other clubs.
6. Advance these surfers to surf in the SA Grom Games in Port Elizabeth.
7. Advance the surfers from the SA Grom Games to the SA Junior Champs.
8. Have some of these surfers compete in the trials for the SA National Team and represent South Africa.
PART 2: Empowerment and Training of COACHING and ADMIN STAFF
1. Identify potential administrators and coaches from the black surfing community.
2. Introduce these individuals to the SSA coaching and judging courses.
3. Involve them in the coaching of the children in PART 1 above
4. Advance them into the Provincial and Club level of administration.
5. Advance them into National level of Judging, Coaching and Administration.
PART 3: Events
1. Initiate a series of three grom (beginner) contests with prizes and trophies.
2. Run a KZN Development Champs between Zululand, Southern KZN and Kzn Central. This event to be held at Trafalgar.
3. Initiate the formation of a development surf club to compete in the interclub contests both locally and nationally.
4. Select from these contests surfers to represent KZN and eventually South Africa.
Process for Development Surfer Program:
To fund the development of a limited number of surfers to be coached and advanced to a point where a certain number -established with a goal – advance into the SA Grom Games and then to SA Champs and eventually to the SA National Team.
Process for Development Administration and Judging Program
Similar process to the development of surfers, starting with a limited number of candidates that we will identify/have identified.
Put these administrators, coaches and judges on the relevant courses and intern them during events. Starting with local development events, then KZN trials, provincial events and eventually national events, where they may be asked to represent South Africa abroad.
